Rothbury & the Border Country
The map below covers Upper Coquetdale and embraces most of the places where Storers/Storrers are
referred to. We are fairly certain that Storrers are “ours”.
The area is very fertile and therefore became a frequent target of raiders during the 1500s. The best account of Rothbury and the surrounding villages is in Dixon’s book, “Upper Coquetdale”. The best account of life during the time of the Raiders can be found in ”The Steel Bonnets” by George MacDonald Fraser (author of the Flashman novels).
Storers, Storrers, and Storeys are mentioned in Snitter, Alwinton, Bickerton, Biddlestone, Caiston, Flotterton, Hepple, Netherton, Sharperton, Thropton, Gt Tosson, the Trewhiitts, and Warton.
Most of the references are to farms, land, and property from 1538 to 1903, when Dixon’s book was published. As far as I know the Storers of Mount Healey are the only ones left in the area.
